At Venture Academy, our team provides drug and alcohol treatment for teens in Canada. These services are available for male and female teens ages 12-18. The goal of our drug and alcohol treatment program is to help your child eliminate substance use so they can lead healthy, productive lives and make positive choices that do not include drug and alcohol use.
One of the most challenging times for teens to avoid drug or alcohol abuse is on holidays, such as Halloween. Our Venture Academy team wants to help your teen learn how to enjoy themselves without drugs or alcohol, especially on Halloween. Sober Halloween
A growing trend among communities is to ban teenagers from trick-or-treating. Unfortunately, this leads them to utilize their own means to occupy their time. With that in mind, peer-hosted Halloween parties could be a time where your teenager encounters drugs and alcohol. However, you can do a few things to encourage your teen to have a sober Halloween.
Sober Halloween Activities
Sober activities are also helpful if your teen is already in recovery. Unfortunately, Halloween is difficult for teens in recovery because it can remind them of their past drug and alcohol use. However, some activities can help your teen reframe Halloween as a sober experience, such as:
- Let them hand out candy – One of the best parts about Halloween is the candy. Unfortunately, communities are banning teens from participating in trick-or-treating. However, that doesn’t mean that they can’t be a part of the fun. If your teen is too old to trick-or-treat, treat them handing out candy as a rite of passage. Your teen can still dress up in costume while they hand out candy to the neighbourhood kids. While handing out candy, another fun activity you can do as a family is play costume bingo. Create a bingo card of costumes you might see while handing out candy.
- Watch scary movies – Watching scary movies is something you can do as an alternative to handing out candy. Or, you could make a whole night out of Halloween-themed activities.
- Engage in an outdoor fall activity – Depending on where you live, you can do a couple of things to get out of the house and have a sober Halloween with your teen. For example, you could go on a haunted house tour, go through a corn maze, or go apple picking. The good thing about apple picking is that you can spend family time together baking apple pies once you get home.
- Host a sober costume party – There are so many things you and your teen can do to host a sober costume party. Get your teen involved in the whole process. This includes planning a menu full of spooky-themed treats. Your teen and their friends can have a costume contest. If you made costume bingo cards for handing out candy with your teen, you could even use those again.
