There sometimes comes the point in a parent’s life where a complex set of problems or concerning behaviours in their teenager need professional intervention. It’s a moment charged with raw emotions and driven by an intense desire to find the right path for a child who seems to be veering into the unknown. For these adolescents, navigating the teen years can often feel like steering through a maze without a map or a compass. What they need is not just discipline but understanding and not just guidance but empathy.
Motivational interviewing in Alberta and Ontario, Canada, can break the cycle of resistance and guide your teen toward positive, lasting change. Call 866.762.2211 or contact Venture Academy online for information about our teen psychotherapy programs and how they can help.
What Is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational Interviewing is a therapeutic approach that aims to engage the individual’s motivation to change their problematic behaviours. The counsellor seeks to help the client explore and resolve their ambivalence about change by expressing empathy and avoiding confrontational methods. It’s a non-judgmental, non-confrontational, and non-adversarial approach, a method developed to treat addictions but now widely used for a range of behavioural issues, from quitting smoking to managing diabetes.
At its core, motivational interviewing is about asking the right questions. Through exploring change talk—where individuals articulate the desire, ability, reasons, and need for change—counsellors gently steer the conversation to magnify this talk. This, in turn, elicits a personal argument for change, which could be the tipping point in altering the destructive course.
Unlike traditional directive counselling, where the therapist identifies problems and assigns advice, MI views the adolescent as the expert on their own life and values. The therapist’s role is to listen, guide, and support rather than to instruct or prescribe. By doing so, MI can foster an atmosphere of self-exploration and self-acceptance, paving the way for open dialogue and, ultimately, growth.
How Our Motivational Interviewing Program Can Help
Venture Academy’s MI Program is a beacon of hope for both adolescents and parents, a structured yet flexible framework designed to address the complex issues teens may face, such as substance abuse, behavioural problems, or mental health challenges. Here’s how our program stands out:
Individualised Care Plans
Every teen who walks through our doors enters a program tailored to their unique needs. There is no one-size-fits-all at Venture Academy; we customise care that resonates with each teen’s individuality, leveraging their strengths and addressing their shortcomings to forge a path to improvement.
Building Trust Through a Core Value
Trust is paramount in any therapeutic relationship, especially when working with adolescents. At Venture Academy, our approach is built upon the foundational value of trust; in creating a safe, non-judgmental space that teens can rely on, we forge the trust necessary for them to open up and actively engage in their healing process.
Sustainable and Lasting Change
We don’t aim for quick fixes; we aim for the kind of transformation that lasts a lifetime. By fostering an environment where active reflection and decision-making are encouraged, adolescents not only tackle their immediate issues but also develop the emotional resilience to face life’s challenges with a balanced and informed mindset.
Family Integration
A teen’s environment plays a huge role in their development. Our program integrates families, teaching understanding, encouragement, and support to create a cohesive and reinforcing environment that sustains positive change long after the program concludes.
